The Prison Warden is an unnamed witch and minor character in Hooky. He is the leader of the prison at the Floating Rock, and works as a lacky of Hilde Wytte. He is one of the first antagonistic characters in the series.

Appearance[]

The Warden is an older witch of slightly short stature, being only a bit taller than Dani and Dorian. He has white hair, with a white, bushy eyebrows and a mustache. He wears a pair of circular spectacles which sometimes obscures his eyes. Like most witches, he wears a tall black witch’s hat and black clothing.

In his first appearance, he wears a long trench coat with a pronounced collar, which blends into his all-black outfit, with a white necktie.

Personality[]

The Warden is a stern, somewhat grumpy character. At first, he is cordial with Dani and Dorian after they bring him the last prince he was searching for. However, once Dorian is caught stealing a dragon’s egg, he immediately brands them as traitors, and vows to capture and punish them. He is not concerned with potentially hurting them, and even though they do not escape with the egg, he still is determined to capture them for even attempting to ruin their plans.

He does not seem to trust people very well. Despite working directly with the Wytte Family for years to bring down the non-magical kingdoms, after Dorian’s attempt at stealing the dragon egg, he suspects that the Wyttes are attempting to ruin his plans, and begins to turn against them. He does not seem to be a fan of children, as he comments that they have “too much energy” [1] , and after Hilde attempts to pass off the situation as them playing, he does not accept this as an excuse[2] .

Background[]

The Warden allegedly comes from an unnamed ancient and powerful witch family, similar in status to the Wyttes [2]. We see during Damien’s flashbacks that sometime before the start of the story, he began conspiring with the Wyttes to help strengthen the witching community in hopes that the next generation of witches will be able to rise up against the non-magical royalty. He is the one that suggests that a Witches School be established. He regularly meets with the Wyttes over the next few years to assist in their plans for revenge and power.

Story[]

Introduction Arc[]

The Warden is first introduced in episode 3, when Dani and Dorian bring a captured prince to the Floating Rock. He welcomes them, and thanks their family for their service to his plans, which he decides to reveal to them. After walking them to the dungeons it’s revealed he has been imprisoning princes across the kingdoms, believing them to be the enemies of all witches. After Dani and Dorian are caught stealing one of the dragon eggs that the Warden has been keeping, he orders the guards to attack them. As they escape, he brands the Wyttes as traitors.

At the end of episode 6, he is seen in Castle Wytte meeting with Hilde explaining the events of Dani and Dorian’s escape. While Hilde does not take the situation very seriously, the Warden is furious and wants proof that she did not conspire against him. He relents, but states he will search for them, and that he’ll pay a visit to her brother.

Witches' Sabbath Arc[]

The Warden does not appear again until episode 36, when he is seen inside the Floating Rock before the Witches’ Sabbath, arguing with Hilde. It’s revealed he ordered the attack on Wytte Manor, which has now led to Hans and Angela being missing, and that he also posted wanted posters of Dani and Dorian around the kingdoms. He brands them all as traitors and suggests that Hilde may be too, angering her. He then warns her that the King has not been crowned yet, and it could anyone - including him.

The Warden then greets the witches to mark the beginning of the witch’s sabbath. He and Hilde introduce the Soothsayer, and explains that a sacrifice must be made in order for the prophecy to be seen. This leads to the Warden revealing that he kidnapped Hans and Angela, and plans to use them as the sacrifice. As he listens to the prophecy being revealed, he is angered to learn that the King will be on the of the Wyttes.

With his plans of being King ruined, the Warden throws a fit – saying that he was the one who planned everything, so it should be him. When the Soothsayer explains she still needs a sacrifice for her crystal ball, Hilde sets her guards on him, and they push him into the orb, which swallows him whole.
